I have a Remington 700 SPS in 270, which I'll be moving on soon, looking for $1550. Stainless, Bell and Carson stock, Leupold VX-3i 4.5-14x40 with CDS for 130g Remington core lock, threaded. If picked up, I have about 40-odd rounds too

well you have not said you are anti wood blued or worried to much about weight - the earlier Remington BDL and ADL from seventies and eighties early ninties were very good accurate rifles went downhill in the later years though but yes great buy earlier ones - Winchester 70 same -and the Rugers ( slight question on accuracy odd one ) if you found a Parker Hale someone has worked up maybe worth a look robust old Mauser action some had very nice wood but need a new modern barrel and bedding to shoot well - I would avoid the BSA getting on a bit now maybe hard to find parts for same as earlier Stery Mannlicher very nice but parts - BRNO shot well solid old rifles earlier Tikka shot well but pricy and early sakos stupid prices even though the 270 model the Finn bear beautifully made but heavy as is not a rifle to carry to far - yeah dont turn you nose up at some of the older rifles The Remington BDL a good one will give a modern Tikka a fright for accuracy They also made a CDL some of them were nice

Consider this. Price out the scope, rings and suppressor that you'd add to a bare rifle
Second hand that Vortex would be worth 300, the suppressor 300 plus 50 to fit, rings 100. That's a good deal up above, plus ammo, slings and bag.

The original question was brand. I think that comes down to features you think are important in a rifle. I wanted a 3 position safety or bolt unlock button so I could unload with the safety on and lock the bolt closed. I wasn't prepared to compromise on this so it immediately limited me to Sauer, X/A bolt, Howa,, Mauser M18 and a couple of Savages (Sako are too spendy).

Are there any features like that which are non-negotiable? If so, then

If you have must haves, that will help narrow things down.

I always said I’d never sell my 270 - and then I did! And I regret it.

Absolutely loved it - sold it to get a 300wsm and while I love that - and think it’s a better rifle and calibre, I miss my 270! Just so point and shoot - easy as!

There’s not a lot of budget options near you on trademe - but there is a tikka on this site that’s a good deal!

Does your 300wsm not point and shoot? what do you need to do to it to fire? Sing it a song?

    Exactly.

This would be a wonderful first rifle and be cherished for a lifetime. Maybe he would come down in price a bit.
Tikka M55 one of the best production rifles ever made but not so flash that putting a suppressor on it would spoil it.

Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.

Yea it does point and shoot - it’s a 300wsm hahaha.

I just miss my 270 is all.
As I said I think the 300wsm is a better calibre… just a bit overkill on some of the wee fallows I’ve been shooting, but then again so was the 270. Once neck shot a fallow at 50 yards and the head came clean off!

I help my buddy find his first rifle 6 months ago! Found a tikka 270 m55 on the gun rack of a second hand place - $500 with a scope and threaded - picked up an old can off here for $120! Oh and it shoots under 1moa ofcourse.

Nothing wrong with an older rifle if it's well looked after and a suitable caliber. I'd take an old 270 in good condition over a brand new Mossberg any day

The stock on it is pretty f-ed but it is just an example, he needs to make compromises somewhere

There are literally dozens of 270s in the used racks (and often more out the back) at most gunshops, for whatever reason it's a bit out of fashion! I recently bought an "as new" old model Tikka T3 270 for $1200 with a good scope and optilocks . . . Literally a $8-900 rifle.

The key with 270s is to have an expert look at the barrel with a bore scope , a good many of the older examples will have fired a lot of rounds and have a shot out throat. A much carried example might look shitty on the outside but mint in, and vice -versa.
