A theory, the exiting gas has some braking effect as it contacts the internal baffels, yes its contained but may still have an initial effect untill the internal pressure reaches x. plus the suppressor catches and slows the progress of the escaping gas releasing it over a longer time frame lowering the peak force as already claimed.
There is little argument that a good break will have a greater influence but personally reducing recoil is only relevant to a comfortable level, Im not interested in having the best /latest/greatest, other considerations take precedent. Convenience being first and foremost. So, often a can will be the best option but other times a reasonably priced well designed brake will. ymmv
