they ALL have issues (except Toyota's apparently but their dealers don't really talk to common people.)
Buy something with a factory warranty and trade it when its due to expire

I thought the hilux had injector issues? Or was that the last model with 3ltr diesel. As for some other comments I live on farm it will be used on farm a fair bit and open road travel. Would also like the options of driving up the braided rivers after a tahr one day. I did like the tritons as they seemed pretty good value. I was not really that keen in the amarok as I've heard the engines are highly strung and don't take abuse to well. Also like the ranger cause they look beastly and pull like a school boy at least on road.
Cheers for the replies I'm still fairly undecided ha also I'm not buying new have a 30k limit so title may have been misleading.

@Cartman Last model I think!? Thats when you could buy a head complete with valves/springs for 1K to stop bad publicity.

I had a 30k limit too. Would have liked something flasher but couldn't spare the coin.
Ended up getting a Foton. Had done 10000 kms and still got the balance of the factory warranty. Done 15000 kms so far and no issues.

I've still got my T2 Foton, 60K now not a problem apart from me hitting a radiata out hunting and pushing the front left in but thats why we buy insurance. same scenario I couldn't justify spending 30K +. For me great for throwing the dog and or dirt bike on

This is one of those no right or wrong answer questions and ultimately comes down to a personal choice. Every manufacturer has issues with new vehicles no matter what anybody tells you. I've been fixing cars long enough to know that. At the end of the day a car that had been looked after will be in better condition than one that hasn't no matter what brand it is. As I said a personal choice. My choice would be an amarok I have 1 paid same sort of money as your budget and can't fault it. It hasn't let me down. Will it in future? Probably yes at some point but no car gets to the end of its life without ever failing.

Just ticked over 10,000 in my new triton. Been happy with it, complete stuff up with he canopy but that's another story. Truck goes well on road and done a little bit of off road and handled it well. Towed a trailer with a tonne on it and didn't notice it at all. Does use more fuel than advertised (9l/100km rather than 7.4). Have coughed up for new a/t tyres which won't help. Really like the 'on the fly' change from 2 high to 4 high.

Tried most of them out and on the road couldn't tell the best so opted for the cheapest which also comes with the best warranty.

WE had a couple of issues with our 2010 triton. firstly 4th to 3rd failed. apparently a common fault and i think the new gearboxes have solved this issue.
the EGR system is a bitch, the inlet manifolds and egr gets gummed up by nz's awful diesel and its a nasty job cleaning it out. I have worked out a mod to turn the egr off and it also makes the truck more economical and a slight increase in power.
Of course this beings the wifes truck it had to have bullbars, led lights, new stereo inc all new component speakers, amp and subwoofer, camera, monitor etc etc

@Cartman how many kms? I just been away and in my hilux and done 750km on a tank so i was pretty happy with that. As said above, ever vehicle has it issue's it comes down to your budget is and what you are happy to drive.
We all forget it wasn't that long ago all we had was 2.4l non turbo diesel's that were lucky to do 100km that drove like shit and couldn't over take in
