CBR1000RR (mine), 2008, expensive trued speedo, 285kmh on speedo, nor nor east of Perth. Easy, straights with gentle bends, travelled 15kms in 6th gear @ 13,000rpm.
Gentle bends became sharp, knee down corners. Mate on a Hayabusa, flat chat too, reading 304kmh, left behind.
Jap speedo's are extremely optimistic over 160kmh - wifey's Hornet 900, me riding solo, speedo showing 225kmh, cop's radar gun showed 185kmh.
He thought his radar gun was broken, let me off, as the bike had a Ulysses Club number plate surround.
Current ride here in NZ - BMW R1200RT. Vmax these days is a gentle 140-150kmh solo. With wifey on pillion - 120kmh max.
Had few mates in WA get their speedo's checked on a dyno rolling road - most were 15% over at 160kmh, 45% over at 220kmh.
While not denying that m/cycles are quick, speedo's can lie - a lot.

What about gps app on the phone? Do they give you a reasonably true speed at those hi speeds?

My Garmin GPS still shows a max hold speed of 308kph on (you guessed it) a TGV. None of the countryside is in focus less than a kilometre away. A guy who worked on it said at least once a month, someone tries to beat the TGV by crossing the tracks and it's a --messy-- end..

Incidentally, the reason they use English for the pace notes is because the Finnish words for 'left' and 'right' have two syllables and take longer to say. Many Finnish drivers/codrivers do - I guess like most of Europe they learn 2 or 3 languages including English from a young age, which would make it easier to adapt.

Kankkunen is one of the all-time greats though - such a natural driver, its like the car is just an extension of his body. He has also set world speed records on ice (330km/h) and in a tractor (130km/h, on snow).

Funny enough the yanks actually got very close to that Bugatti's speed in the late 80s with the Oldsmobile Aerotech.

One of the videos, he passes a truck.... hes going like 310kph or whatever, another truck coming the other way. He gos thru the tiniest gap without even flinching on the throttle.

Its impressive in a dangerous irresponsible kinda way.

Had a mate in the uk who drove in the same way, he now has one leg as he did not fit between the two trucks, best I did was smash my mirrors , needed to stop further down the road to check my under pants
