Have you looked at the Kuiu Kennai insulated jacket?

    https://www.kuiu.com/products/kenai-...40340433207454

I borrowed one from a mate a couple of years ago for a winter Tahr hunt and i went a bought my own straight after as I was so impressed with it.

I am 6" 90kg and have a 112cm chest and the Large fits perfect as they make them slightly oversized to accommodate layers underneath. I can also fit my Macpac ultralight down underneath still too and is now my go to combo when winter hunting.

They are expensive full retail, but if you get one on sale they are well priced.

Hence the wait for a sale and they are more like $300 something.

Yeah for sure, always look for angle, deal or hangout for a sale, they’re never far between.
Often if you add something to cart of a US retailer and leave it there they’ll offer you or send you a discount code.
Typically you’ll be offered a discount for subscribing or becoming a member of their site. Then just unsubscribe if you don’t want to be spammed, use a non-primary account, or setup a one off account to get the discount as many company’s will keep a register email accounts to stop double dipping from the same email reregistering after unsubscribing.

https://www.marine-deals.co.nz/ridge...et-excape-camo - it's got the thinsulate one of you were after. I scored one, keeps me warm, but guessing probably not for South Island winters.. I'm 173cm/97kg and went with XL. And also seem to be sized maybe a little on the smaller size, so try before you buy. It will roll up into it's hood, so it's not super bulky. It weighs 660gm by my scales. And it's bloody cheap compared with some of the options out there.

Have a look at the current Bivouac sale. Gear from the likes of OR or Black Diamond is going to be much better quality than some of those hunting brands.

Sportsdirect has a sale on (spoiler - it isn't really 90% off) for Cape Heights jackets.
https://nz.sportsdirect.com/cape-hei...r=AFLOR%5EMens Some seriously decent jackets for about $130 all up.
They shop to NZ from the UK for $11. Just make sure you get the right size.

Use code SD20 which should give an extra 20% off.

I just picked up a near new MacPac Pulsar. I think at best it was worn to try on and not much more. Only had it for a few hours but really like it. It has a long tail which is great. It fits well and the hood is not too big. It does have cinches to the hood to pull it in if really an issue. Best thing was the price. $35. Can't complain.

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

Plus 1 for the Macpac Pulsar jacket, I'm on my second one now although I still use my first one which is 10ish years old. The Pulsar I like for autumn and spring as it's not warm enough for me for winter. I actually rate most of the things Macpac do part of the alpine series (although I find their sizing can be a bit hit or miss).

I use a Rab primaloft jacket for winter (15 years old and going strong!).

Has anyone tried the Swazi Puffadder? seems expensive for a synthetic puffer to me.

I love it, pit zips and front zip give you pretty good temp regulation.
Hood is real nice when sitting in the cold.
I also carry a puffer vest, it packs down really small, and put this underneath if I’m sitting for extended periods.
Meant to be shower proof, but haven’t worn it in rain to see how good.
Got one of these Kuiu Axis Hybrids and it is surprisingly good, but a bit heavy/bulky for walk-in trips, but awesome jacket. Can wear to the pub or in the hills.

Also have a EE Torrid for backpacking trips - good bit of kit, not as warm as down but... works when wet. Light, fragile-ish, keep it for hikes basically.

And an old Mont Bell synthetic jacket which was on sale and turned out to be the best thing ever, cuts the wind, warm enough and surprisingly indestructible - not because of any design features but because I keep being surprised at the trashing it takes.

Has anyone gone from a down puffer to sythetic and found it any warmer?

Down is definitely warmer for equivalent fill and loft. Synthetic fill also loses it's loft a lot faster. Main advantage of synthetic is that it is way warmer when wet, so kinda depends on how you are using your jacket as to which is the best option.
