    Pack Recommendations

    Gidday team

Looking for pack recommendations. Will be hunting the Kaimanawas predominantly and those of you who know the area know it can be at times, tight stalking country. Looking for day bag recommendations that can be used overnight when I choose to and needs to be quiet for stalking.

Anyone have anything in particular they like? I’ve been looking at the Tatonka 48l stealth bag which I feel would be enough for a day trip but given I want to take it overnight at times I wonder whether I just get the 55L pack.

I don’t do cameras as I have a face for radio so no extra equipment other than your standard. Be good to hear what’s tried and tested.

Cactus Huntaway is a good solid bomb proof pack. They are made of canvas so can be a bit noisy but that is fixed by putting a fleece top over the pack and straps through the arm holes. I have a 45 l huntech but it's just a tad small for an overnight trip. For me at least.
The Huntaway will carry a good load easy.

Second this. Huntaway won't let you down. The only negative I've come across is if you fill it to the top with meat the straps can cut into your shoulders a bit.

My 25 year old Macpac pursuit but since the new ones are not as good I wouldn't replace it.

Another vote for huntaway. Have had mine a couple of years now and take on 90% of my trips. Have also carried 32kgs out in it and it took it better than I did! I added twin needle pouches each side for smaller bits

I use my Macpac for overnight unless I need to carry the tent as well.

Sorry meant to say *litre* not lt.

Cheers Jack. On a side note, here’s hoping the lockdown won’t last long!

Depends on your gear and the time of year. For overnighters I pack pretty light and could get a couple of nights out of a 40l. Used to use a huntech but have switched to the hunt away now. Carries a load much better.

I comfortably fly camp out of my huntaway for 3 days. By using a drybag with light gear under bungy and side straps for fly etc I've carried out bivy gear and two boned out deer on multiple occasions. Does push the limits of harness comfort tho.
