They were ornimental uniforn accoutrements Rushy. Not a fighting item at all.
What type of leather do I need to try and make a sheath for a knife?

Classic fillet knife for a local spearo. Simple stabilised swamp kauri handle and nitro v blade at 61rc with a medium to stiff flex profile. Convexed down to almost zero edge so should cut super well without being chippy.
Extra long handle as owner has big hands. This will see a fair few fish... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...17088637c2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7880f492e2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...097df8a0b7.jpg

Bought these last weekend. The Sheffield folding knife is good, $10.99, I have another but they do need a good cleaning up with a whetstone to get them razor sharp, this one has a burr from the factory sharpening. The Green River outdoors knife is great, $41.99, I did run it over a leather strop to improve the edge. I was really impressed with the Bahco knife, like a razor blade and didn't have to touch up the edge in any way, lady at the shop said they get alot of farmers buying them, sold six to one farmer few weeks ago. I'm going back in tomorrow to buy another maybe two, at $13.95 each why not?

the green river is same shape as what I use...the yare an awesome knife and will do pretty much anything...... welcome to the bacho club...we have one in each vechille and they get used a LOT.... easy t oresharpen when they eventually loose the edge too.
George Henry often have them on special. They're on now for $12 incl GST. I bought half a dozen for me and a few others a while back :)

My first hunting knife was a Green River outdoors knife. Victory do a copy of it. There knives are really cheap if you buy direct. Saves about $10 a knife, Overnight delivery too!

This has turned into my favourite hunting knife... Somehow I bought 3 of them... https://victoryknives.co.nz/drop-point-knife-10cm/
Cheers :)
35 years ago it was called a bushmans friend........ maybe the PC crowd didnt like the gender specific name....
That's right; it was too!
@Micky Duck I believe they are still called the "Bushmen's Friend" by one of the companies that make them. I went in to buy a couple more Bacho's but shop is shut all weekend and all of next weekend too.
@Micky Duck Now you've got me hankering after another Bushman's Friend knife.... Will go well together when hunting with the old 303... Memo to self "I don't need another knife, I don't need another knife, I don't need another knife..... " :D
@Three O'Three I mail ordered my Bahcos from Henrys (link above)

Not a model I make very often but one of my favorites, A Copperhead model, I enjoy the simple lines on this model.
Honeycomb handles that have different colors in them as you move the knife , G10 bolsters liners and pins . Satin finish stainless blade.
@The bomb. The shop I bought my first one from is only 15mins from work, just getting there within their business hours is the problem
well happy jack.....the knifecut version of the bushmans fried...called a rabbiters knife does come with sheath and steel.
Thought victory and the mob that makes the nz green river knives were in cahoots?
I've seen the Victory one advertised with the sheath and steel in shops; not directly from Victory though
@The bomb. Farmlands, there's 3 left
My Wee Necker,
My first custom bought 16 years ago from US. Markings of the maker is gone and for the life of me I just can't remember who was it and what steel was used, someone on the Bladeforums. Used it for some kitchen/camp jobs then I kind of forgot about it. Still razor sharp, sheath is getting a bit frail. Size is 2.5inches blade and 2.5 inches handle (Some kind of Micarta). In need of some TLC.

Boar hunter, custom made, using rail track, forged blade. Cheap, but it `s good for cutting meat from bones, rips.
Attachment 195453
Survival knife, never used in field yet because the weight. Good steel though

My ESEEs. First one up is an ESEE6. Took this one in exchange of an ESEE3 from a very dear friend. This was supposed to be my apocalypse knife all kitted with a Maxpedition pack and a fire steel. Who knew apocalypse will be caused by a virus not by zombies :D

A Viper in 1084. Stabilized Pohutakawa with dual layer micarta . G10 liners and pins.
For a Tasmanian hunter in NZ on some guided hunts wanting to take a knife with some NZ timber in it to remind him of his time here.

Finished last week and already out on a hunt. Green snake skin Juma Viper in 14c28n.
I must be on a nostalgia trip at the moment. Picking up a 1916 .303 to hunt with yesterday and today a Victory Outdoors Knife turns up in the mail! My very first hunting knife was a Green River Bushman's Friend; the Victory is a copy. I think they bought up Green River? Anyhoo; the only difference is that the original Green River was carbon steel.
Gotta give kudos to Victory.... The service from the factory is brilliant. Three days from ordering to my (rural delivery) mailbox. Packaged in a cute little Victory logo cardboard box with a sticker and knife care guide. Nice to give a NZ company credit where it's due

John, I handed my friend that new filleting knife you made on Monday, along with a kingfish, I waited for him to pull out his manky knife and make a few cuts before grabbing it and throwing it on the lawn then produced your one and said 'hey you should try this one instead' :) he is wrapped mate, thanks again for the amazing piece of art ;)
cheers gibo glad he likes it
Speaking of filleting knives. Made this little ko deba (japanese style filleting knife) to test out some laminated steel. Is a machine on smaller fish like koheru or blue macks. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...50c34d2826.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...42687f8113.jpg

Little edc/bird and trout prototype for testing. Rwl 34 @ 60rc. Micarta handles, hidden pins with an orange g10 liner. Plan is to have an option with timber or micarta handle for a trout/small game knife and a paracord wrap with pocket sheath for a light edc optionhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ed02e3ef6a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3366218605.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...142def9823.jpg
