My thirty plus years old 026 was getting overly noisy as had hole in muffler you can poke finger through... finally bought replacement muffler off trade me,had been worried it might be wrong so asked questions to double check.it arrived today.out to shed I go fearing it's going to be shite of a job. The four bolts came straight out. Looked at both old n new mufflers. Old had internal baffles,a matchbox sized metal box with holes all around it...new one has nothing.old muffler just has slots to let exhaust out,new one has mesh screen with outer cover...so I put new front on old rear and reassembled. Sounds much more socially acceptable. Will see how it goes in next week or two.if it feels bogged down I might change it around or just remove fine mesh,spark arrestor. Happy days.

If it bogs down just remove the mesh

Nest builders also don't like a slightly richer brew and full throttle runs for the time it takes to empty the tank. Found that out one day when the saw just wasn't going right so I gave it the jandle and then the remains of a nest went for a flight in a puff of flames. Saw went a lot better after that. Didn't know about blocked mesh and mufflers before that haha, also leaving a rag in the exhaust ports stops the bloody nest builders cold (saw needs to be cold first though). The thing was only sitting for a few days in a woodshed open at the front so it doesn't take them long when they decide to start construction! Also a lot more careful about where I store the gear now.

Most of the gear I have now the mesh screens are pulled out and tuned - they seem to go a heap better without the screens and there are no issues with carbon crudding up the exhaust and stopping the gear from running. My latest glitch seems to be little bits of metal - had a couple now where a little bit of crud gets into the cylinder from somewhere unknown and lodges in the sparkplug closing the gap to nothing and stopping the engine cold. Very weird to have had two of those one on a leafblower and the other on a weedeater in close timeframe - both units had good fuel filters and air filters and nothing seemed off in terms of corrosion so a bit weird. If I have another one of those where the thing is at full throttle and just stops the plug will be the first thing I check!

I do chainsaw work as a side hustle, I use stihl files and vollorbe and they’re both great

The 251 has been a great wee saw,super reliable and oh so safe to use with the chain brake on main handle as well as up front,the ergo start features have been awesome and I HIGHLY recommend for any one who is struggling with normal start up system.you can literally start saw using two fingers..... But it's gone from my stable today,swapped my bro in law for his older,slightly bigger 029... The specs on that are just a smidgen more than my old 026 which is a demon of a saw. The 029 is bigger body . Looking forward to using them side by side next time out... Fun times ahead.

Using my dads MS210, which is probably 20 to 25 years old was always a pleasure but then i bought a new ms291 a couple years ago and what an unbelievable upgrade. Not regarding the size of it, it's a far bigger more powerful saw, but the anti vibration features mean prolonged use is far easier physically. I couldn't believe how much smoother it is in my hands, mind blowing. mine is also the CBE model with ergo start and tool less chain tensioning etc, enjoy it very much

Was tad underwhelmed by 029 yesterday...sharpened chain better ,fresh fuel and today,much better saw...the slightly smaller 026 goes harder somehow...both same 20" bar n chain but the old girl just goes harder....pick up the newer,bigger 461 and holy smoke does the sawdust fly. I did use the really old n tired 026 to rip a ring in half but that was rather painfully slow by comparison... That got another good sharpen when I got home. Fueling car at Z earlier,I'm looking at the 100 octane petrol,might just have to give it a whirl as the BP 98 always made smaller motors sing. Even a 50/50 mix giving me a 95ish octane might be worth a crack.big pile of rings to be split now that is for sure.

Stick with 91 octane, anything higher won’t make a chainsaw run better unless it’s modified compression ratio demands it.

Stock saws will run better with 91 octane as it contains a gnats willy more energy than higher Octane fuels.


A misconception that high octane fuels contain more energy is common, they don’t, they just ignite and burn slightly slower in high compression situations to protect high comp engines from detonation or “ pinking”


Best thing you can do for a saw is keep it extremely sharp and run the best bar oil you can find, and use it properly with an unrestricted exhaust

Ok thanks for that,will stick with 91.....and I used a 084 a few years back....gave me a raging hard on,that is for sure,the power was unreal,just kept chomping along.
