Would anyone know if it is worth trying to target Tuna out from Pelorus sound i.e. how far out into the straight would you need to go to find the blue water/right temp conditions?
Yep I reckon it would be. Especially at the moment, blue water is real easy to find !! Albacore are happy in anything over 18 deg. Plenty of fish in 20.5 deg water in tasman bay at the moment.
The more splash out the back the better.... ie: run as many lures as you can handle [emoji106]
Most importantly keep your heads out of the boat, look for any signs of life.
The old man reckons its "boredom, interspersed with moments of madness".
Those moments are the stuff dreams are made of [emoji41]
Good luck [emoji106]

I was out past the heads the other week in a bit roughish conditions hoping to have a groper drop but being solo it wasnt a runner. Headed out on an angle towards Kapiti Island [but no where near it] and was in 16.8 degrees of water, in the 4 or 5 I guess km's I travelled I had hit 18.8 and it was still climbing when I turned around, colour of the water was a nice blue. I was following a line on the sounder my boy had been on a few weeks prior to me being there and they had seen tuna jumping. More than doable imo.
Thanks Guys
This time my come back on April, one of the mission is the completely explore Marlborough region from sea to hidden stream in the mountain and bush. Spent two days before in 2018 but the rains stopped me to go further. I believe Marlborough region can provide more than Qtwn area, just few people notice the potential as same as the Mackenzie country.
Having a weekend break with the family in the Far North. Couldn't resist getting up early to flick a microjig off the beach. First cast and boom!

A perfect result then.
Folks down okiwi , gave them my Tuna lures with very bloody precise instructions to Ma ….because Da is a old navy diver and if I say white he yells black …so they headed out to find a swell running , dragged the shiny stuff down to paddock rocks at 45 meters ..they had boats inside them and out even wider …dolphins a few lazy gannets but not a nibble ..
So it was a bust ..bashed some cod as the family does got a feed of pannies with the burley at 30 meteres ..wind started so they headed for home , afternoon tea and a fish gut in a lea shore caught the last of the tide got the boat out ..
Ma / Da looking for intel are folks still catching Albies in Tasman bay ?
I have a question...
Fishing with a live bait on a egg beater reel with the bail open. Anyone got a better idea than this?
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...dadee9185b.jpg
It works ok with a small mackerel bait but didn't work at all with a slightly bigger kahawai liv'ie, the peg just wasn't strong enough to hold the line.
What do others use, cheers [emoji41]
@stingray I had two mates out for tuna yesterday off the Able tazzy. One fella got none, one fella got 4 both working the 40m area. Sounds like there are less out there than there was a few weeks ago. Also the water temp has dropped a bit. Perhaps that SE last week has pushed them out a bit !! Think we might have another crack on tuesday if the weather is ok !

set your drag lightly,so balloon n fish wont move or it overspool when fish on a run, takes but a second to crank it back up when fish is on,thats what we do worming for trout.
Thanks @kukuwai, watching the fishing shows the use rubber bands for trolled baits.
Question why are you not fishing livvies in gear?…a kingy snack fished with a light drag …then dial up the drag to set the hook …
Are you fishing the mussel rafts where max drag is a requirement to skull drag the fish away from the lines
Yep your onto it. We were tied to a mussel line today when that photo was taken.
It didn't matter tho as no kingis turned up [emoji41]
Heaps of boats out early today for a change....apparently there is a Nelson fishing comp on. [emoji106]

My Trout real is actually Awesome for that. It is an old DAM which has the drag at the back. Don't seem to make them like that much any more.

Out early with @ROKTOY.
Fishing was slow, caught a small mako that put on some good Arial displays before biting threw the trace.
Bloody sea lice were eating the baits.Attachment 218034
Got a couple of nice snapper as the light came then ran out of tide..... persevered for half the day for some pannies kahawai and more spiky dogs than I'd like.
Back at the ramp it seems we had done better than most with everyone having a hard time on this side of the bay.
Yeah we had discussed the very same!
Pretty keen to have a look close to home....it's coming up to this time of year.

That would be $5900 dollars in the bottom off that dingy for a couple hours work which would suit me just fine.
However we have a quota system here in NZ.
A generation back maximum take was set for all valuable species and those that had been commercially catching and had records were basically given "quota"
This has since resulted in a Triopoly?
Where basically 3 companies own pretty much all the fish in NZ.
I'd love to go fishing for myself for a living.....I know I can catch fish but I don't own any quota so it's not economic to do it.
It is also illegal to sell recreationally caught seafood or game.
So I give away most of my catches cos it makes me feel good and fuck the system.
Yeah, I knew the quota system, but even tough I found still lot of fishes were far under catch limits, frost fish for example. if told you a wild catch rock grouper was selling for equal to $650 per kilo in another part of pacific up north, what you think?:P
I like fishing very much even beyond hunting, but stopped for over 20 years because of busy works. Still trying to grow up my sea legs:pacman: really do `t like throw up four times or more in one trip. When I was in Auckland I really given a thought of buying a Yamaha jetski the wave runner doulex. But a jetski will not suit southern waters right? Anyway, good catch...keep it up!
my daughters landlord has a pontoon boat bit like old school zodiac that fits AROUND the big jetski..so he can take ????3-4-6??? people out on harbour..... guess it still has advantage of cheaper to run and shallow draft...looks hard case.
Out this morning with a workmate.
Bit of a fuckup morning.
I woke and got everything ready an hour before I had told him to arrive apparently :D
Launching didn't quite go textbook.
Went "deep" to target big snaps....got 2 but the spiky dogs were punishing so bugged out shallower.
Got some pannies, one more good snapper, a Trev some kahawai and a fair few gurnard.
Started badly but recovered well.
In on the high at lunch.

What depth were the spiky's at cam?

lol I think we all probably have one of those. I don't want to spoil ya present but they were pretty cheap :XD:
Oh and I can relate with the workmate and a bit of a mishap. I took a workmate out and hit the bar coming back in :O_O: It can put you on the wonk when you get out of your normal routine.
Well done on the catch though :)
Had a couple of days off work with my sister and BIL over to visit, we hit Matata beach and fished change of light and tides and ended up with bugger all, yesterday after fishing all morning down the beach we headed to Ohiwa harbour to escape the sun and sit under a Pohutukawa tree.

Picked up a couple of pannies and a Kahawai which I turned into dinner of hot smoked Kahawai and BBQ baked Banana leaf wrapped fish.
One Asian style stuffed with ginger, mango spring onions, chives and chili, the other stuffed with lemon, wild fennel and onions. Bloody good and the BIL got stuck in and we finished the lot between 5 of us.

On the water early today in dads boat with a couple of work mates. Bit nervous after VC's post yesterday but all went well in the dark fortunatly.
Tuna were the target, but took the time to drop two long lines @ 25m and 35m on the way out.
Lures in the water 40m off tonga as the sun rose and the full moon fell.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7a69e701b3.jpg
Unfortunately the Norwester picked up real quick out there and it got far too rough for us real quick so we about turned and headed back the way we had come.
Next minute a strike, we are on !!
Tricky business clearing the gear and fighting the fish while keeping the boat heading into the swell. We won....1 tuna in the bin !!
Bit of a discussion... lures back in or motor to the long line. Trolling won [emoji106]
10 more minutes trolling in the direction of land and another fish is on......landed !! We now have two.
Real tricky fight, copped a couple of waves breaking over the top so we are now bugging out !!
Back deeper into the bay (out off Adele) and things got ALOT better. Lures redeployed, found some more tuna (35m) but these guys wouldn't play ball !!
Tried all of Mark Cottons tricks (flutter jigs etc) but no joy !...Time to get the long lines.
First one (35m) 1 snap and I reckon 24 spiky dogs. Second 1 (25m) 1 gurnard, 1decent rig and 23 spiky FUKIN dogs [emoji23]
Did a bit more trolling for a rat king, a southern sailfish and a couple of kahawai [emoji106]
All in all a bloody good morning on the briny...

There is an old saying in this bay that "you don't catch anything under shearwaters"...
I can categorically bust that myth...
You CATCH tuna under shear waters !!
Especially if they are 'snorkiling' ie are sitting on the water with their heads under looking down !!
This is Gold, look closely at the pic....troll past them, circle them the hook ups will come !!

Tried and proven on many occassions, over many years [emoji41]

Nice, I see you put the flounder plane up too :XD:
That gurnard looks pretty hard case in such shallow water
Yeah the flounder plane went hard out with some very aerobatic flying , was very impressive as he dusted the hills and faces across from us! Then with his final salute he rose from behind the hill , dusted the front side and blasted straight over head …probably saying “ratatatatatat “ to himself as he lined us up from a mile or two out …certainly was fishing with a show last night!
