So I’m back, healed and ready to tear into it!
I missed the top of the south gathering, but @ROKTOY took pity on me and organised a flounder bash at our local!
Met a few bloody top folks and little top blokes , sorted who was going on the deep end and away into the tide, they hauled, I advised , and boom …..a bloody ray , then a second ..beached the drag and roktoy and I sorted out the rays with wide eyed little blokes sharing the moment getting the rays back into the tide with a bit of untangling and mud and spray.
Then all hands on the net clearing weed sticks and shells , this drag went great with 8 flatties hitting the sand 4 shorts were lifted back into the tide and the other 4 into the bin, with a flooding tide we headed up for the dry , stopping for a quick dip up stream and another few very large flatties .
We ended the evening with a sausage and bread feed, but the sun went down and the chill crept in and sent us home.
Part 2
Down to okiwi with VC and his lad, beers in the fridge and tucker in the cupboard …boat loaded with dive gear out to a handy spot , average conditions but good vis for the top of the south, VC and son into the tide, but testing conditions…well tested them …new foggy masks, choppy conditions all made it ….pretty shit really!
Friday , gave us a weather window of about 4 hours before clam seas and good conditions …well basically went to absolute arse.
So being on holiday we got up at 6 had a coffee , bacon and eggs and fried tomatoes, a yarn a cuppa and about 8am wandered down to the ramp, by then the breeze was setting in.
We hauled down the coast a found the swell had turned great vis to shit, VC dropped me in on some “ good looking turf “ and WOW it was just that holes ….cracks ………..and CRAYS …only thing was they were all only half grown and they were everywhere!
Now the thing about small crays is they have long antenna so when you roll over a rock or look in a crack you think …”you beauty crays” …….only to find a half grown pup instead of a barncaled full grown battler!
Well I went from crack to rock to cave to overhang all the same great turf with only pup crays.
In the end I managed two reasonable keepers, the other sizeable crays had seen divers before and headed way back as soon as they felt my presence.
Surfaced to find the weather had caught up with us, into the boat and a punch into the wind home!
The rest of the weekend went to shit wind and rain , which meant cards beer yarns and food …not at all bad! Just not diving!
Cheers to @ROKTOY , and @Happyjack and Allan ..sorry mate I forget your forum name .
As well as VC and his family plus my beautiful lady Lisa for another week / end of adventures, yarns and laughter , amazing food and memories.
Someone must have a photo to share ..so please put them up.
Cheers
Did a couple hours on the incoming tide yesterday in the Manukau. 200m from shore in 4-5 m
The smallest ones are 30cm.
Bloody nice to spend a couple bucks on fuel & half a bag of squid, and feed 6 for 3 nights.
Normally my hunting and fishing endeavours produce a very expensive food/cost ratio….

Loverly fat winter Sei ( pollock)
Caught it from my neighbours jetty.
Attachment 239807 Okiwi
Caught a whopper Cod below the house. This time of year they come into the shallows to graze on seaweed.
In neighbouring Sweden Cod costs $100 per Kg,a tidy Swedish Mauser costs $200.
That makes this a 6 Rifle fish.
12 kg dressed or mathematics error?

That’s insanely blue water, I’m waiting for the tuna and the billfish to show up
The bay is packed full of tucker, it’s only a matter of time …so much plankton squid and very soon pilchards and other baits …the mako are fish eaters and if the bait is here that they are chewing on and wind and currents continue so will be bill fish.
Well that’s my theory ..
@veitnamcam
Yes.
Finally the stars have aligned, and it seems I'm going fishing tomorrow. Hopefully the boat remembers what to do.....
Yesterday wasn't bad day managed 16 snapper . Had group of about 6 kingfish swimming round the sea anchor for about 2 hrs..tried everyday to catch em lures bait livie resorted to yelling at them . We're more interested in swimming in and around the sea anchor.boat ramp at okahu wasn't too bad at 530am.but when we came back was much busier around 1pm.clocked up some more hours on the stabi
.
Oh man you guys are tearing em up!! My kids are gonna freak when they see the mako pic, great pic!!
Caught up with @stingray for a beer down at the bay, went out for a fish this morning with a mutual friend but fish weren't taking, came back with 1 gurnard, 1 trevally and 1 blue cod between 3 of us. They had a good day the day before.
Went fishing yesterday, had to drive around a bit to find fish. Got enough for the 3 of us. Snapper mainly, plus a single kw and a horse mackerel.
I'm in the driver's seat/side, and just to keep it nearly level....Attachment 240931. I need to find smaller mates....or put a queen seat on my side.....
Hard fishing on Thursday in auckland hauraki.wife got a 9 pound snapper .we got couple other keepers plenty of kawhai though
Went out through the Port Waikato bar on Friday. Tried 35m mark first and it was very slow with no size. Steamed out to the 60m mark and cleaned up. Nothing huge, but lots of solid west coast table fish. Had all we needed in 60min.

Took the boy out with a mate who needed a good mojo infusion.
It wasn't a horrible afternoon.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...dbe00a4ba5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7c789a6940.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c7ce7f1ce7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7cebb3a872.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ef44ca273c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a980b79ae2.jpg

@veitnamcam finished work at 11 by 1 were getting things sorted.. new suits , required different weights and a bit of a sort out but , by hell summer heat and wetsuits and the sun really test the diver.
So glad VC is home, back on the crays!
Attachment 241421
Still a few reasonable snaps lurking round in tasman bay

Couple of decent blueies Attachment 241433
Stonkin blues! Southland ?
North Otago
Well done on getting out there all and epic performances…especially the guy willing to be a deep fried diver just to put some crays in other peoples bellies :)
I dig the squid swimbait!!!
Not to brag but I did put line on 3 reels yesterday…me slow on the uptake
Sorry folks only took one photo and this was it.

Good morning on the water. Only managed 2 snapper. 1was 8lb off the longline. Mate got a real nice 15pd on on his baitrunner.
Lost a few hooks to big sharks.... livie under a ballon got eaten twice by something with plenty of go in it and looking at the slashed trace had sharp teeth [emoji41]
Livie on the bottom got some attention too. Big xos grayboys which we ended up cutting off at the boat.
A few gurnard rounded out the morning, one of which was caught by the younng fella on a sabiki. He also got some nice big mackerel which we kept for the smoker.
It was a busy little boat but tonnes of fun [emoji106]

Attachment 241523a few more blueies bit rough today but made do
Shit even I could put up with some pretty crap weather for a haul like that
Out for a flounder drag this morning with my Dad and my Son.
Very weedy with the high water Temps and big tides at the moment but the flounder are still there and good size.
Tonnes of little mullet busting up the surface in the shallows and quite a few rays about feeding on the surface on something.
Attachment 241697
Flounder dog had fun
Attachment 241698
Mullet probably getting busted up by kings bro ;)
After work dive with @stingray yesterday...sorting a pick up time was made difficult because he had left his phone at home.
Got that sorted picked him up at dive shop....newly serviced gear how good but his card was in his phone.
Got that sorted of to his place load up and off.. "have ya got this that and such and such?"
Nup loop back to his and get such and such.
Finally all sorted we launched on the high, the local fauna at the ramp was pretty good and Joe wasted no time in getting naked to get wetsuit on...I held off expecting some heavy chop outside but it was mint.
Dropped him on a new spot but it was shit, headed off to some known cray spots dropped him on one mark anchored on another nearby and I suited up and swam into a shallow spot I had found a cray in the past and yes there was one there again.
Alas multiple dives on it and it was so far back I could just barely touch it but not get a decent grab to get it out.
I left it with all its feelers and legs intact and hopefully next time it might be further out.
There were crays in residence on the deeper marks but all well educated it would seem.
We buggered off to other marks, seen a pod of dolphins with their young.
Attachment 241879
Dropped anchor on another known mark and I swam in shallow for an explore...no butters seen...shot a couple of kahawai probably pushed in from the dolphins and found a small patch of paua, maybe 30 of em none bigger than 100mm....they just don't grow to legal size in this area but cool to see them all the same.
No crays on that mark so back to old faithful spot, drop Joe in...he got lost in 8m vis and prospects around the area and managed to snag a couple of keepers.
Beautiful evening on and in the water and caught up with @fatbellydog on the retrieve.
Let's do it all again soon !
