Went out from Whangaroa for a Kingi jig. Tried my usual spot, no joy. Went out deeper still no joy. Towed a couple of feather jigs back and got 5 skippies. Pretty happy with that. Never caught any before. Bled one for eating. Apparently good sashimi??.
Keeping the others for bait.
Yip nothing wrong with fresh skippy as sashimi. I have been known to eat one on the boat after it didnt get eaten as a livey :D
Few more to try on the flounder

Will we see a balsa wood hand carved crab lure sometime soon??? Your lures are next level good,I'm sure you would achieve success if tried for flounder too.
I had a few goes using the smallest soft baits the local hunting and fishing (yeah I know pre tarrant) had...they were about as long as the longest white bait but maybe twice the girth and kinda colored like a pilchard.
I got a few hits but no hookups but then I was blind fishing. @Joe Schmo very kindly send over some bucktails for me to try on them like they do in the states but he sent them to @stingray so of course I have never received them.
I have however caught two flounder while bait fishing with a ledger rig and one witch fish
I have caught flat fish on softbaits and metal jigs. This one was from Doubtful sound.

Tool an old workmate out for a fish yesterday .
Launched at cable bay so didn't have to worry about the tide but the swell at high tide was an arse getting off of the beach.
Heap of dolphins around.
Wind dropped off and became a beautiful afternoon.
Went shallow for my usual winter gurnard fishing...they weren't there or maybe it was just the slack water around the top of the tide...anyway moved deeper and got onto them and the inevitable spiky dogs..was about 50/50 spiky/carrot.

Gotta love mid week fishing, no other buggers stealing your fish
When it all comes together it goes so right , got home to meet VC in the drive way, got to the ramp to find that we could launch into the creek ,the wind dropped away to nothing .. headed down the creek with just just enough water to motor, got to the dive spot with enough vis to hunt the crays.
Hit a patch of rock with a cray that was silly enough to hold fast , then after a bit of a search found a second that did very silly things instead of escaping it panicked and backed into a no where crack, so he got a free boat ride as well.
Nothing much else about, surfaced and asked VC so I’ve got two do you think we can catch the tide, steamed for the channel got over the bar with less than a meter to spare, saved us from a couple of hours sitting and waiting in the cold and dark for the flood tide , beached the boat , the tide dropped away trailered the boat easily, thanks to the skipper being bloody good at what he does!
Home just before my good lady got home , hot shower and a cold beer. Happy Lisa happy stingray.
Sometimes you just crack it ! This evening was one to enjoy and remember!
Once again cheers VC bloody excellent!

Went out to Kaiaua today, another day of F all. That's 6 times in a row.
Ah yes I remember coming back with a similar amount before :) I assume you are using burly and changing types of bait ( assuming your using bait). I've found when all else fails fresh mussel will catch what's around ( even if that's not what your after :) ) My "go to" baits are Bonito, Mullet, Pilchards, Kahawai and mussels ( buy fresh from the supermarkets)
Had three surf rods out running different rigs and different baits including softbaits but not mussel, thought about mussel, perhaps next time. Two guys up the beach from us had several 400m lines out with at least half dozen hooks on each deployed by drones, no luck for them as well.
Did use berley but only attracted sea lice
Where's the best beach, rock and wharf fishing in Whangarei?
My pick would be the south side of the harbour. Land based fishos always seem to do better on that side. Areas immediately around the refinery and port hold a good number of fish. Ruakaka if you want a more peaceful setting. Weather is going to be shit this weekend.
Mixed deep water bag from the Bay of Islands. Mate was using bait and I was using a jig.

What sort of depth? Sand or foul? I'm keen to target terakihi out from Whangaroa.

I'm off out to the Grouper hole in Akaroa in a few hours, should come home with plenty of fillets.
Got back to home Beijing China 20 days ago, experienced the 38-45 degree of heat with 80% humidity finally the fishing is on the way in Sep when I finish the next and the last visa application.
Stories, pictures and videos came in, shown the king fish is very active 800km out ( In China people call it artillery shell) , cods are getting fat and bigger now, so next month I will go with my wife to the sea and fishing for a month. Have brought new rods, lines, hooks and lures for heavy duty. And, the best medicine for my sea sickness. The last is the find a reliable boat and a skilled skipper to take us to rocks and the deep hole where I may not will go:D
cheers
