Well I thought Dad had gone bat shit crazy when he wanted to take the boat out in the rain this morning. Surely too late for snapper I thought....
Well I was wrong....the old boy was right again [emoji23]

Didn't bother with a long line which was lucky as we had to weed through a fair amount of spiky dogs and barracuda.
It was worth it for sure as ended up with a couple of snaps and some rather big kahawai . [emoji41]

Thanks Kukuwai,
Nice looking Kahawai there, do they hang around all year and chase whitebait up the river mouths when they start to run?
The guy who I having been going out fishing with on his boat went again yesterday with another group and they had boat limit of snapper in 1.5 hours and two kingfish well over 75. After a slow start to the season due to rain and wind, he thinks its the best snapper fishing in the Bay of Plenty for the last few years, looks like its the same down your way too.
Cheers FBD
They usually don't hang around in the inner tasman bay over winter. I think the water just gets too cold for them. Can be found up by durville etc where the water temp doesn't vary as much.
Also at the top of the west coast chasing white bait into the rivers (ie patarau, anatori etc) It can be excellant fishing even just off the beach over there in winter. [emoji106]

Just drove down to the local apple orchard.
Pulled in behind the shed at the workers quarters, Samoan flag flying proudly above the common room.
"Hey fellas you want some snapper heads?"
"Oh yes please, yes please !!"
Straight from my chilly bin into the.....
washing basket !!
Bloody classic [emoji3]
Extremely great full they were [emoji106]

My mission failed, did `t catch any but lost some softbaits and lures when searching around those under water structures. Hope next year around Sep I could have a chance to go back there again.

It was a perfect winters day...
Then it got that much better
Attachment 226343
Got wet , for the first time in months , checked out new turf, nothing to show for a tank…back to old faithful spot …heaps and heaps of crays …from 3 inch long to shorts, was an amazing dive …dropped to the bottom , the rock / cave was empty apart from a few cast shells …looked around the rest of the turf bloody crays everywhere little long feel’rd crays…
Swam around rest of the turf …many many more small crays …rolled over to the last cave in the area and “ you beauty” moment , a couple bigger crays ..
Looked at the biggest out in a wide open cave , I really wanted to give him a heave , but experience said take the handy keeper so sacked him, and grabbed second but she was egged up so let her go, the big bugger was cunning as retreating just out of reach…
The cold water took its toll and back into the boat I climbed…
Cheers VC for a wicked day out, still trying to warm up …let’s do it again …because we are very good at it
@stingray perfect winters day fishing, it was a bit busy down at the end of the road when we drove past at 10am, at least 1/2 dozen boats out...
Looked good this afternoon as well as the tide fulled in and the slight seabreee dropped. Whats the water temp at the moment
Nice haul of carrots.
Cheers FBD

Down to okiwi this morning , before my fishing buddy got back fishing !
Gentlemen hours due to the tide , set forth with high hopes and enthusiasm!
South easterly blown over the top of the hill do we hugged the coast..tried a few spots without much joy.
Ran out of paintence, geared up and over the side t the split rock, twas a ghost town.
Spot two in shallow produced a keeper and a handy buck.
Still half a tank left and no pressure to get a result dived a area I haven't bothered with for 15 odd years ....down and around and around..and damn near crashed into a nice cray, poor bugger was in a easy spot and I took em.
A bit later I had my head in a cave and a bloody cray came screaming past my face ...I darn near wet my suit ;)..he must have being out on the top of the rock or something..no idea where he came from.
But he scurried away and was gone , swam round the rock and hello my beauty..a bit of a battle and a very nice cray in the sack ...the cold was chewing into me and I was thinking of warm cloths but one more set of feelers caught my attention and I sacked another victim.
Saw a few more smalls a couple of beeried females one huge huge red Moki.
The cold bit and I was done. VC as always right there to to pick me up. Bloody legend !
Pod of dolphins came charging into the rocks couldn't se what they were hunting but was amazing to watch them.. fishing was a bust ..one cod for tea
Boat washed fire on and a beer in hand

It took me two hours to sort out which will come with me this time in the only one checked bag...

yum Crayfish, well done fellas. Looks bloody nice and clear and cold. We had a swim down at cable bay today, bit fresh without a wetsuit but water was clear. Mid winter swim with the family.
See a few Snapper are still out in the bay to.
Love seeing dolphins working the ocean, I have had a few surfs on the south coast of WA where we have been surrounded by dolphins chasing schools of Australian salmon, amazing experience to be in the water with them.
Do you guys have the inner ears pain when you dive below 5m, or maybe 6m? It `s like someone use chopstick to poke into your ears kind of pain.
That pain is caused by the weight of the water above and around you squeezing the air in your inner ear. The solution lays in equalising the pressure (repeatedly as you descend deeper) by forcing air from your throat through your Eustachian tubes (which connect the middle ear to the nasal sinus cavity) by conducting the valsalva manoeuvre (forcing air through a closed airway). My god, the shit I remember from my Divemaster days.
Full moon fever !!
A old hand I used to work with said they would set a net for flounder when the first snow hit the mountains!
Well with snow forecast and an early afternoon tide we gathered at the flats , some slid into wetsuit others into gum boots and warm cloths.
Off we wandered across the mud down to the tide ..timed the tide damn near perfect ..we plunged in and set to dragging , @Fat belly Dog says he’s feeling a few bites , the suddenly band bang I’m got one as well epic !
Beached the drag ..pine cones , sticks , a tail turned into a flounder and then another and a few more , smiles abounded the new crew were excited and keen to get the net back in the water!
That done the ebb tide ran out of puff , so we binned the drag and @ROKTOY and FBD wandered up the Chanel to set up for a drag against the incoming
I guided the gum boot crew back to dry land as the flood rushed back into the estuary, then returned to find the team hauling the net after a few hits, 5 large flats hit the bin and we scarpered up the gutter to reset to fish the last spot before we were flooded out .. the tide pushed and we had a few hits then the tide stopped dead .
Sadly the sun was swallowed by the gathering clouds and the temperature dropped more than a couple of degrees and we chose warm dry cloths rather than the chilly water ! The net hit the dry with a handful of fish flapping on the sand …a perfect ending.
Back to warm cloths and a gas cooker , snags in the pan , warm cloths and great company and yarns , a cold beer and burn ya fingers hot snag!
We wandered home into the incoming showers! The temp dropped even more as we left the coast and we looked up at the tops to see a dusting of snow forming with a full moon looming large out of the clag !
arrived home , shared the catch with the neighbours, a hot shower ended the adventure.
Once again a huge thanks to the forum members that take the time to share an afternoon getting wet on my promise of a few fish ..
Cheers everyone!

oh MAN I can almost smell that from here...looks o so tasty .
Thanks Stingray, ROCTOY and Mini-ROC and Gumboot crew, great afternoon sharing laughs and brews with good crew. Not sure who pleased the flounder gods but on cue the wind dropped and the sun came out as well walked out for the first drag and the temp dropped and rain came as we packed up to head home...
Bloody great to have a few mates to talk shit and catch fish with, thanks fellas. Flounder were full of roe and made for a very tasty dinner. Fire and BBQ at my shack after the next drag I am thinking.

Go out, get wet, catch a feed, cook up a feed, yak and yarn. Home and cook up a bloody yummy feed. Mum bought home some hot chips and dinner was done. Cheers @stingray and @Fat belly Dog.
Sorry ROKTOY and Mini-ROK...
spelling not my strong point, thats why that reports taking so long....
I know of a few folk that really struggle to clear their ears, my advice
Start on dry land , your ears should pop, or click or glug..but if they don’t then don’t force them …take it easy trying a couple of times a day gently.
Seasons affect people differently, pollen , dust etc ..so if you have a season that blocks your nose /nasal passage don’t try to dive blocked up.
Medical intervention is a huge no go, don’t use medicine to clear your ears because if they block on the bottom under pressure you will blow ear drums returning to the surface , which can and will cause infections nausea ear bleeds deafness.
So your starting out , clear your ears on the surface and again as you duck dive ..ie your head is a meter under water ..then again as you feel the very first squeeze on your ear drums ..do not wait for it to hurt .
If it’s hurting , stop , please understand your dealing with a very fragile part of you body , damage can cause vertigo, nausea, deafness that maybe on going!
Understand every dive is different water temp and conditions and your physical condition, and environmental conditions change regularly!
Dive to your abilities and comfort on the day.
Better to give a dive a miss than miss a life time of diving!

Been up Whangaroa ways since Monday. This was the first decent day weather wise. Managed this one jigging a reef offshore.
Got a few snaps in the harbour yesterday so it was worth towing the boat up.
A beautiful fish and back ground
It's a fantastic place for sure.
