Thread: Hand placement for shooting lightweight long range rifles ?

Im talking lightweight rifles like Kimber mountain ascent / carbonlight / custom type of weight rifles in magnum rounds (7mm rem, 300 win type and upwards)
Where do you place your non-shooting hand? There seems to be three main groups of people

1. Holding fore end
2. Holding downward on top on scope
3. Hand tucked under stock/pinching rear bag

Interested to hear what technique guys that are consistently shooting 400+ yards at deer are using

1 or 2, never 3.

Very firm consistent grip with both hands. Pull firmly into shoulder.

Interesting. Have been using 3, seems to be popular is the US, with average results

I use 3

Fired one round from my 7mm fatmax yesterday, using technique no.3 held 1/2moa for wind. 522yards. Impact is dead centre windage wise and 1/2moa above the point of aim. Rifle and scope is 7lb 3oz And fires a Berger 180 at 3210fps. I’ve only ever used technique no.3 apart from a couple of offhand shots.

I use 3 but have asked the question of those in the know and what ever works for you is the awnser.
I get great results with 3 and shoot all the different weight rifles I own the same.

A lot easier to get the pressure right on the front end if there is none

If I'm using a bipod I use 3 if I'm off my day pack I hold forend while testing over the pack as I find the pack is usually soft and moves around.

tbh it dosnt matter too much with good technique what style the most important thing is that you always do it the same way

aslong as your repetitive in how you hold the rifle and how much pressure you put on it you will be fine but number 3 makes it much harder to spot your shots

I dare you to explain that to Tussock....on 2nd thoughts dont it will end up ruining thread and you will get sore forehead from bashing on brick wall.

yes sir I believe it was.....he (Tussock)took it in the jest it was intended and replied in same manner.....which you would see/know if you bothered to look/read first..... he (Tussock ) knew to which I was refering...thus he was able to quote it...... case closed.
