Fuck mate. Glad you're still ticking after that ordeal. Appreciate you telling the story as there's plenty of lessons learned in this one.
Can never be too careful out there. Overconfidence can be...
G'day all,
I have a chance to hunt some wild cattle and wanted to test for knowledge and experience from anyone who has shot wild cattle before.
I shoot a .270. Big enough? All I can find is...
We had an epic 6 days there in March year or two back.
DM and I'll give you some intel.
Gotcha.
We were in Long Gully in November last year - just after the drops further north.
Only saw 6 Deer. Also around 8 pigs. 1 Chammois.
What are you referring to by 3rd and 5th period? Timing? Location?
Nice animals. Plenty of venison to go around
Good. I have no trouble. Meet expectations.
Sent from phone - forgive typos etc
I know you said 'no' to Lowa's, but I bought the Lowa Rangers and they met every ridiculous expectation. Straight out of the box and onto the Heaphy hike - 78km's in 5 days, no blisters, no foot...
No bother. Planning a trip for August [emoji1360]

G'day all. I want to trade my Outback for a 4WD so I can get deeper into country faster to hunt.
Looking at older Surf or Prado Diesel.
As a family man though, I'd prefer something more...
Absolutely, Phil. 13 Mile is on the list - once access opens agai in August.
Had a stellar time. Didn't see any animals but had a brilliantly beautiful and challenging walk, good hut stay, stunning scenery and he got to fire the .270.
He's hooked.
Thanks for the advice...
This is probably a surprise to many but because I'm so new to it all I'm not aware of anywhere even for goats!
Will keep pounding the tracks and get the mileage. Knowledge will come.

For sure. I've signed up to HunterHQ so there are options there. Backup plan though. Don't want to start him there.

We flew heli. It was $800pp return for 4 of us. Max load was 600kg.

To be fair mind you - if I had a freezer with Venison at the time I wouldn't of. I'm not about killing for the hell of it. Family is still enjoying the salami.

Sure did Elrond. With pleasure too. The block had no hunters for 10 weeks prior to us and none for at least a month after. They had their time. And like I say - they were not in good condition...
Just to add - I am newish to hunting and have joined NZDA and Handloaders so I can learn.
Have plans to get out, explore and learn.
Not after anyone's secret spot. Just some guidance of where...
G'day all,
Somewhat reluctant to ask this question because I've seen the reaction to some who have asked similar questions.
This weekend I'm taking the son for an overnighter. We're in...
Spent 6 nights on Stewart Island in March. Went to a less popular block on the NW circuit.
All the typical info and approaches that people suggest did us well. Between the 4 of us we saw 8...
That's what I would've thought.
Understood
Looks good but unfortunately we're in Christchurch.
I'm looking for some straightforward places to take the son for a shoot. As newcomer to hunting, private farmland with accommodation on there seems like a good option. There's higher certainty of...
