Thread: First time reloading 270win

Perfect range day this morning so ran through 2 x 5 shot groups, 1@51gn and 1@51.5gn to satisfy my curiosity and others. Apologies for the messy target.





Noticed some visible bulging at the base of the cases loaded with 51.5gns. Around 3 thou, give or take. Is this a pressure sign worth noting? I did get tight bolt lift at 52 gns so….??



Aside from the flyer, 51gn is a clear winner. Better shooting would definitely tighten it up a bit and will run them over the chrony for a speed check but it’s under m.o.a so calling it done. Need the rounds for hunting around here as the 223 can be a wee bit undercooked for some situations.

Still have 130 SST’s, 130 + 140gn Sierra’s to play with this year and also keen to try out some Win760.

The bulge just above the solid base of the case is nothing to worry about. Just the case being smaller than the chamber. Often seen when the cases are a little undersize'

No, not yet. Wanted to concentrate on consistent shooting but will get a chance this coming week to try one out for the first time.

Should run a pool on likely speed and have a mystery prize for whoever is closest Will it be an average or on first shot?

If powder is 760 or 2209 and your using 130’s, start at 53/54 and work up.

its accurate,and it will kill...JOB DONE..... unless you intend to twiddle n fiddle with dials...knowing speed is irrelevant.... if you feel inclinded,put up target at 200-300-400 yards and shoot n see where impacts are...and hold over accordingly....
point n shoot has a lot going for it.

Now that I seem to have resolved my posting issues to some extent it’s time for the last update on my first reloading exercise. Stunning day last week on the Monday so cruised down to the range and check sighted the rifle in with a three shot group. Apart from No2 shot which I knew straight away that I’d duffed. Felt the rifle shift on the rear bag as I pulled the trigger but back on track with a fourth. 1/2” group at a 100m so job on this load combination done and dusted.



Also, as an academic exercise and to satisfy my own curiosity, ran five over the chrony. Spread was 47fps and average velocity was 2680fps so not exactly going to set the grass on fire but it’s a light rifle and makes it pleasant to shot. Proof will be in the pudding.

had you NOT used it you will still be 100% happy with your load LOL
now you have opened that can of worms it will niggle away in back of your mind

The pudding came sooner than expected. Shot this hind three days later.



Interestingly, it seemed a perfect heart/lung shot just behind the front shoulder at 100-125m, zip meat damage, and she only stood for a second or two before just falling over. After gutting, checked internals of the rib cage and yep, punched through nicely on one side.



A totally different story after skinning!!

great stuff...awesome to hear they are working for you..... write that load on wall or reloading bench with permanent marker..its a keeper.

Am I right in surmising that the slower speed allows for much better expansion at closer range given the above photo?? And you’re right, this load is a keeper. I won’t be chasing velocity. It’s so sweet to shoot and dead on the money. This has always been my work rifle and it’s good to get it right where I like it. Confidence is everything.

nope..slower speed by the laws of physics will make things expand less....it simply cant work any other way..what it can do is keep a soft projectile together rather than flying to bits .
the .270 has long been lambasted (hows that for a wheelbarrow word after a nightshift?) for destroying too much meat....which simply means it kills things really well. if you change your point of aim or your projectile type you can change the amount of terminal damage... the classic meatsaver shot the yanks like ,is a weird one... you NEARLY managed it except for connecting with leg bones....it will kill animals alright BUT they can walk/run some distance before dropping,me personally I much prefer what you have done,take out one or better still both front wheels and they arent going anywhere,if animal is close and settled,the neck shot will damage less still. in these times of plenty loosing meat of front wheels isnt such a bad thing.talking to 2 other fellas at smoko table at 04;00 this morning,its not unusual for fellas to shoot 20-40 fallow over weekend on some stations and leave 99% of it to rot on hill along with the wallabies...oh how times have changed in last 30 years.
Im still carting out every salvagable bit.......actually the last deer I shot was a young fallow shot with 222 and I lost 99% of one font wheel off that one once I listened to RUMPY and stopped being silly and left the bloodshot stuff behind..hit pretty much eggzachary same as yours has been shown.

I’m not big on waste either. In decades past, venison was bloody hard to get post the deer recovery era so treasured every bit. Probably why I’ve always been a head/neck shooter. Some of the other old shooters I hang around with a big on taking out the front wheels as well.

Dug these out of the sand. Only about 6-8” deep.
