    Have a look around there are a couple of other threads on this recently plus one on short range sighting in.

    Checking your gun is still sighted in would only take 3 or 6 shots or even 1 and generally be just fine.

    Once upon a time I did a sight in session on the open riverbed up the Edwards valley at Arthur's Pass and on the way out shot a big stag near the road where it joins the Mingha. Certainly a couple of km away deer won't be disturbed. This was midweek so no trampers to be disturbed either.
