    Exactly, he said he had the bolt held in half cock and it fired when he closed the bolt, the firing pin should be held back by the sear when doing this, obviously it was not and this is what he was testing.

    As you say above, the sear was not engaged and that means he has a problem as it is meant to be engaged unless he pulls the trigger, which is what he was testing with the tape over the primer.
