Cartridge popularity survey. Gibo, this one aint for you.

Really interesting results from Backfire Jims survey.

Despite the hype the older cartridges reign supreme, and if you look in more depth there is a common theme of mid range recoil being a deciding factor overall.

And of course the overwhelming number one cartridge tells there is a good number of people with common sense.

I think it would be fair to say that some hunters on the forum are really into calibers and reloading and experimenting thats their thing and good on them but many NZ hunters the differences between a 6mm CDM and a 6 mm PRC they dont understand and likely dont care - their mate has a 308 does well with it so thats what they buy - 308 270 243 will always be very popular and rightly so - are there better well in some eyes yes in others no - but it depends on what hunting one is doing if I was going after thar then of those 3 only the 270 fits one is better of with a 7mm rem mag - buts its all good fun and long may it last

No chance...more the fact that so many great older cartridges scored so highly...the tried n true. Certainly didn't agree with all he said but MOST of it made sense.

    Exactly.
The "Americanisation" of our sport here annoys me. Every time I get an advertising email from Hardy nowadays I want to puke. Not because of their products but because of how they now promote them. Same for some of the NZ YouTube hunting vids - they are more like a marine military exercise than a good old hunting trip. We are losing our unique identity to this stuff.
And since when did a water bottle become a Nalgene?? FFS

Maybe Ya'll are confusing americanisation with advertising hype. It seems the average hunters opinion of what works is closely aligned with over here. And from my times in the states I find the ordinary dude rolls his eyes at it just as much as we do.

The ordinary dude here is thanlkfully mostly visible, there mostly invisible. America is now defined by how social media and the general media portray them, which I find quite unpalatable.
But as you say they role their eyes. Our family over there cope by ignoring it all. And really, they are hardly affected by anything National. It's Federal and local stuff that affects them and that they have a greater interest in.
As for advertising hype the fact remains that a lot of people here are getting hooked and its seeping into our hunting culture.

Craig asked me if he had left his Nalgene in my ute and I didn't know what the hell he was talking about

Yes, my favourite turns 120 next year and I have been using it since 1967. Prior to that I started with a .303 like everyone else (with good results) then in 1967 I purchased a brand new .243 BSA Majestic. 3 months later I dropped it like a hot spud and got my first .30/06 and never looked back!
