Greetings,
It was interesting to see the differences between Jim's list and that of the other respondents. Also what was missing from both lists.

The "Americanisation" aspect is true and something I have seen also steadily happening over some time. Maybe annoying but inevitable I think due to the huge resources ths USA pours into hunting and shooting sports ( investment, product development, social media promotion, competition ete, etc ). Personally for all the benefits available to me as a hunter, handloader I can tolerate the "Americanisation". In fact the current state of affairs, generally, may be the best we have ever had in certain regards.
Last month I took my fallow stag at 230 meters with a 160 gr Accubond going at 2600 fps from my 7mm08 Kimber Montana. I sold my 280AI as I was just not using it.
Most hunters would consider 2600 fps for a 160 gr bullet to be rather pedestrian. I was using my Leupold VX3 in 2.5-8X with Boone and Crockett reticle. Zero at 100 meters, next dot down is 200 meters and next dot down is 250 meters.
The same scope setting with 139 gr bullets at 2800 fps is zero at 200 meters, then 300 & 350 meters.
I have stopped experimenting and mucking around for the last 15 years.
Ha ha. Nice.
Straight out of China though, that thermal stuff. They have got the smarts on the Americans.
And look. Still called water bottles. https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesa...AaAneLEALw_wcB
Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.
When we’re talking just plain old general hunting and not for a specific purpose, I’m not surprised one bit. I choose a 270 when I started out, don’t know why that particular cartridge at the time, it just made sense and I never regretted it. Same goes for the 308/30-06/7rem mag for others. They just plain work and there’s not much out there that made a significant improvement across the board when you take deep dive into the ballistics.
Nowadays, if I was starting out, I would probably go for a 7mm08/6.5Creed as a modern general purpose, flexible cartridge. Splitting the choice in two, the 6.5grendal for close work and a 22creed for everything else.

A lot of great products come out of the USA.
As long as you have a turbo strength bullshit filter to cut through all the hype, you're ok.

Good to see the lack of waffeling on with a load of irrelavant crap, just gets straight into it.
Haha, made my day this thread, I tried to buy a 270 last night but missed out. But I joined the great unwashed this morning with one in a Tikka. Instead of a 30-284. Sometimes boring is good.
Greetings,
No mention of the latest crop of extra large cartridges either.

A statistical sample of 800 out of 107 000 000 firearm owners... hmmm. That's a whopping 0.0000074766% of the population of US gun owners, before you even start taking bias into account. Make of that what you will.
