    Hunting in the North Island

Hey guys, my name is Vin and I知 new in the hunting sport and keen to go out for pig, deer or goat hunt.
I got my gear and fire arms license but I知 finding hard to choose the right DOC land to hunt. A lot of options out there but not sure what direction to take in terms of terrain/land for beginners.
I知 looking for a place for a days hunt within 3 hours from Auckland. Would private land be my best bet? What is the process for private land in terms of costs etc. Or any recommendations on where to start in terms of DOC land? Would anyone be keen to let me tag along?
I知 happy to drive us so you don稚 have to pay for petrol and carry your meat out of the bush for you.
Sorry for the dumb questions and thank you in advance.
    Cheers.

Holy shit, my name is Vin too. You're the only other Vin on the planet that I have come across. Awesome.

I regularly hunt the Kaimanawas, I'll sound you out when I head in next. Someone on this forum may be able to help you out sooner.

Head up the kaimai's up wairere falls. Lots of clearings about. And hard to get lost as quite flat up the top. Go very slow and be quiet. 2 steps 2 minutes looking.

Or okahu valley campsite. Nice camping road end and just hunt the valley sides. Couple of Creek heads about. Just stay out of the creek beds.

Try looking up mid okahu campsite on doc website. It's off okahu road.

It is near murupara. In the ureweras.

It is safe to park your car there but there other places I wouldn't.

It'll be in the whirinaki park technically.

I was more saying that the terrain at the top is relatively safe compared to some other places. Partially cos of the traffic it gets and because of how it is not too steep. With good skills a nice loop is possible and then a quick walk along the track back home.

But yes. It still needs to be taken seriously and good navigation is a must

Have a thrash about in the kaimais, kaimamawas or pueora. They all have deer. Do a bit of research, pick a spot and hunt it till you know it well
