I applied in May apart from an email saying they have received my application nothing since. A mate applied in Jan, his interview is in 3 weeks. It would seem that where I am things are taking a bit longer than average

5 months for me to renew, and it was all good, common sense and safe storage for ammo and bang sticks locked in my prison got me a 100% pass. I was stressing about nothing at the end of the day

They say a month on average, mine took 3 weeks after inspection and interview, but I suppose it depends where you live

Clearly, your application is being processed.
Because of the debacle created by the new legislation and the attendant backlog of applications, the "rules" were changed such that if you applied for a licence renewal before the expiry of the current one (even on the day before), your licence is still deemed to be valid, unless the application for renewal is rejected/denied.
You are right, I had to do some gunsmithing work and was curious to see if the licence was still valid, it was when checked.

I called them last week as mine has now expired and they haven't even contacted any of my references. They said takes 3-5 months for renewal.

    Theory Test Mid May
    Vetting Mid August
    Confirmation letter September

So, 6 months at this stage.

You know it's still valid, eh? Took a few months from application for renewal 'till inspection and interview. They interviewed my external referee the same day as my inspection and interview. That was a short and easy process and had my license in 10 days. Smooth sailing really.

Lodged renewal application end May. Interview was last week of July and license arrived mid-August.

I was surprised the police only did very short phone interviews for my wife and referee.

has this been the case for the rest of you who have been renewed recently?

That’s what it was like for me. My licence was a renewal not a new licence. Think for a new licence they interview your referees in person, could be wrong on that tho.

From what I gather they are classifying applications by risk and applying different levels of vetting. Presumably someone who for example has held a FAL or the last 40 years without incident goes straight to the low risk pile.
Seems like common sense so good on them.

I'm located in Northland. Applying for new FAL (never previously held one).

    Applied May.
    Course in July.
    Interviews Sept.
Awaiting licence to turn up in the post.

I think since they've consolidated Te Tari Pureke under one roof it seems to have sped up. I know of a guy at work and it took him 12 months to have it done in Northland and renewals seems to grind to a halt anecdotally around the time of the merging of services earlier in the year.

You are categorised for risk before they interview. Low. Medium. High.
The Authority told me I was low risk (60 years of FA ownership and clean record) so it would be a relatively quick process. It was.
