power has little to do with it...placement has a LOT
walk away and die...hmmmmm they do that with any cartridge with a chest shot, how far they walk is different matter
there was an elephant poacher caught some years back, when caught they asked him how he was killing ol jumbo... they didnt believe him when he answered so he did it to prove to them he wasnt lying...he laid in dirt on elephant trail and shot up into heart, via the thin skin under arm pit with a SINGLE SHOT .22 using shorts

and wearing out a barrel after 1000 rounds happens with hot loads and/or piss poor cleaning so your point is????
    75/15/10 black powder matters

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

If you have a garden and a library, you have all you need. Oh, and a dog, and a rifle

Day 8 of 11 hunting 3 different areas. Identified a likely looking bush terrace, climbed up and sure enough there was a stag roaring. He was roaring well but wouldn't come in, so Dean kept him going while I snuck in on him. He stepped out from behind a big red beech, I shot him in the high shoulder, he more or less flopped over. A zone with a reasonably high number of skinny deer.

Yesterday's effort (day 11). I roared him up in a nice open red beech gully, he came charging in to about 10m and stopped to roar, so I shot him at the base of the skull. Not really in the spirit of this thread though, anything works with a head shot.

In the UK we are not permitted to shoot the larger deer species with a .223 even though it would be capable, just not ideal in the hands of recreational stalkers.
I cull a lot of deer in the UK and on the smaller deer such as Chinese Water Deer, Muntjac and Roe it is an excellent round.
VMax is an excellent bullet for head shots but for body shots I would certainly follow the advice of using a stout soft point in as heavy a weight as your barrel will stabilise.
For a 1:10 twist you should be good up to 65g soft points.
