I started off registering online. All good until the department of internal affairs wouldn't accepted my driver's license photo for RealMe as it had a tiny blemish on the photo although clearly identifiable as me still.
So I decided to ring to get firearms registered instead. Twenty minutes later it was all done. So I recommend doing it over the phone as apposed to online. No RealMe bullshit to worry about

When I first had to do it, right at the beginning, was having problems with fixed details coming with various firearms models.
Caliber and mag capacity the main problems. Some of the models had to be best result and then edit. I did find I could just lodge them in as they were and then edit the capacity and caliber after that. Hope this may help someone. It was a lengthy and counter intuitive process. I got through 13 firearms in 2 sessions of about 1.5 and 1 hours. I found saving and coming back to it made it easier. It may be slightly different/better? now.
Rang back again this morning to continue with my part in making New Zealand safer.
15 mins in phone queue again - must be nice to have a monopoly and not have to care about customer satisfaction.
Finally get through and ask if I can register my firearms over the phone as I had trouble matching them to their records via the online registration. Lady says no, she will look them up for me and give me the table reference number for the correct firearm so that I can successfully look up them up myself via their sticky taped and stapled together abomination of a portal.
Turns out the Howas are entered with 3, 4, or 5 appended to the model name which indicates how many rounds the rifle holds. Worked out which of the 3 models they have on file is mine, all good.
The Winchester Model 70 Ultimate Shadow they have on record is listed as being manufactured by Fabrique Nationale. I was under the impression this means it would be Belgian manufactured, whereas my rifle has "Made in USA" stamped in it. I ask the lady if she knows what the story is with that, of course has zero clue. I tell her that I'm concerned about entering inaccurate information into the register. She says that it's best for me to enter this potentially inaccurate information then to ring them once the form is submitted so they can enter a new model if necessary. I ask if we can do that on the phone now instead of me ringing back up. She tells me no.
If only I was in a gang or wished to possess illegal firearms. I would save myself so much hassle.
I didnt get a match to my FAL first time either. Turns out it is very sensitive to extra spaces, so check that when signing up.
Other than that, it was pretty straightforward. I did discover that my Zastava doesn't actually have anything that says Zastava - only a tiny proof mark. .
I just registered my barrels, my receiver doesn't have a serial number. The whole registration process was real easy, which was a bit of a surprize.Quote:

Yes - I know it is on-line or telehone only - BUT - they will have received the information - which they cannot deny.
If you plan to sell any firearms I suggest its useful to validate your account to monitor what the Register thinks you have.
I registered recently so that I could sell a rifle. Did the rego and validation so I could see them all there. Gave one rifle to a shop to sell on behalf, and was told they would 'pull it over' from my account to theirs. Rifle sold, I got paid and I went and had another look at the register and saw it was still registered to me.... this about 3 weeks after sale. Had a closer look at the register and couldn't find any function that allowed me to advise of the sale. Gave them a call and was told that if a disposal is via a registered dealer then the seller didn't have to do anything 'cos the dealer was supposed to do it all. If disposal was 'peer to peer' then that has to be notified by phone call.... no functionality on the website to do that . WTF??
Polite lady at the Register said they would follow up with dealer, and seemed perturbed that sale was ~ 3 weeks ago, rather than a couple of days. I expect the dealer got a call. I'd have thought the new owner would have registered it by now (even if the dealer hadn't run it through his account) , and if the Register works an alert would have been thrown up about 2 of us having that rifle in our possession?
So nothing to be encouraged about at all, imo.
I was told it doesn't come off your list until the dealer on sells it? Doesn't make any sence but that's what Gun City told me when I traded a rifle, and so did the person at the register.Quote:

Brought up the issues that people seem to be having in regards to the incapability's of the register and the people running it,

They had a large spiel in regards to physical safety, safe construction, mounting, location, security lights, alarms, cameras, etc

Also brought up of people being told to register items to the nearest closest item rather than the exact item.

Nothing particularly remarkable about the people in the shop not being on their game, but the fact it is now sold but still registered to me suggests one of:
- the new owner has been slack and hasn't registered it, but I'd have thought the shop would have insisted?
- the new owner has registered it, but the system ( or the people involved) havent reacted to the same rifle being held by two different people contemporaneously.
Neither possible explanation fills me with confidence.

It looks like if you were ringing to register a gun you just bought of a gang member, they would happily register it with out asking where it came from and wether it was registered or not. I actually wonder when they register a gun, if an alarm bell or a notification comes on their screen to say that a gun is allready into the system….
Well I store a rifle for someone else and its registered to me, he being a newbie didn't know so also tried to register it, I got a phone call same day to see what was happening. So it seems they can do that stuff.

I think it must be just for internal mags, I registered 2 other rifles with detachable mags no issue.
Not sure why it doesn’t just say mag capacity in the options instead of No. 3, 4,or 5….. probably would have saved them a 1000 phone calls, then again, so would making a link to the firearms table available :wut:
You would think the numpties in charge would use something like "3 round internal", "5 round internal" rather than a cryptic 3, 4, or 5 on its own. That wasted half an hour of my life I'm never getting back.
The problem is these Regulations were written by people who have no comprehension of anything Firearms related. They were written by Bureaucrats for the majority of people that inhabit the Firearms Authority, namely bureaucrats. Every Govt Agency/Public Service Dept is staffed with these people. Yet another reason you have to enter the details yourself, to absolve themselves of the cluster it is turning into rapidly. Enter the Police who will fight tooth & nail to keep it under their Jurisdiction, they will say it is for Safety but the real reason is the massive Budget that is involved to run this monstrous Bureaucracy which, like they have always done, will divert it to other uses which is exactly the reason we are where we are now and we have this monstrosity of a cluster in the making. This has nothing to do with Safety it is just another Govt Dept like MSD, ACC, NZTA and staffed by like minded bureaucracy intent on keeping their jobs. I went through the validation process last week and this evening logged in for a look. Blow me down, there's a rifle registered to me that I already rang them up about roughly 2 weeks ago to transfer to its new owner. I have confirmed with the new owner that he completed his side of the transfer by ringing them up.
The little faith I had in these pricks is now down to zero. If it wasn't for going through the hassle of validating my profile I would have no idea about this.

Just a suggestion......Those who have problems with the register should document them with date, time, place and full details and then forward them to Nicole Mckee. It will come in handy for any review that may take place.

Going forward with the Register, in future will you be allowed to Register a Firearm that has not previously been Registered. If so that negates the You Must register all your Firearms within 30 days now as you can add them on to the Register at a later date. I well remember under the old Registration System Police were happy to see a Firearm on the Register so asked no questions as long as it was not a stolen firearm.
