Got a call from a mate last night, can ya gimme a hand to lift my pots in the morning. So I was up at just before 0300 and in Westport by daylight.
Quick coffee then out to pull some pots and a quick fishy for more bait.
Both went well...I even caught a snapper.

First one for the season. Took a micro jig first cast. Did bloody well to land it on a 7kg setup near reef, was a pretty good scuffle on the light gear.

Proportionally, I've landed more kingfish when I've hooked them as bycatch on light softbait gear compared to heavy jigging and topwater gear.

We boated four trout, two browns n two rainbows.kept just the one brown. Then caught further three browns while having lake side dinner.my good wife even did the gutting duties!! Life is good. I did feel a bit sorry for chap from Nelson who was fishing next to us,at one stage heathen bait fisherfolk on both sides of him were landing fish while he drew a blank.

Home, flew in Saturday morning then suffered the domestic travel situation that Air NZ is now infamous for.
Ended the day with a flight to Blenheim and family shuttles to get us home,

That’s the sad story, now the tale of great times, easy crays , flat seas , 10 meter vis ..

And it was just that out of bed to a gentlemanly start, time for a coffee and cart the gear to the end of the drive, VC turned up loaded the vessel of “lets get ‘em”
and away got to the launching spot and it had me wondering if there was anymore space in the ocean, trailers everywhere.
Into the tide and out onto the water birdlife everywhere, Kawahai busting up just another epic spring day.

Into my wet suit after a week of beers and snacks had me nervous, it still fitted “ phew” …down in to another spring of epic vis 2 years in a row ..straight onto the cray rock “ cheers VC “ heaps of life but had to be picky nothing large and had to get past the smalls to reach the keepers ..oh what a problem to have

Got three into the boat did three prospecting dives , but a unfit diver wears out quickly , so VC took pity on me dropped me on another glory rock..titsed a couple sort a great number of shorts, bagged a keeper and that was the end of my tank.

Got to the surface to watch VC release a keeper size brim , stooged about enjoying a beer and looking for turf with the epic vis, VC sees a good
Kingi in the shallows, nothing on board to tempt it with.

Another very special day here in NZ.

We live in gods own country for sure.
