Honestly, you guys are making me rethink my life choices!
Took a trip to Golden Bay that had been on the books for quite some time. Left fish to find fish. We put in a helluva effort to get fish in the bin. Barb let us know we were done day one by wrapping the pot rope and 3 other rods. Company couldn’t be beat…will stay home in da Tasman for awhile. Bait kicked the arse of the softbait/jigs :/

Nil durum volenti !!
Took the man child out for a snorkel today.
The wind was further south than forcast and put me off my original plan so had a look closer to home....
I have a spot that generally always has a crayfish in it and its shallow enough for me to see it.
But! It's always there cos its safe as ....two big rocks with a 6 inch crack between them and a big long shallow cave underneath.
As I got to the rock a fish turned up in the weed...I thought is that a butterfish or a kelpy? As I was looking straight down on it it was hard to distinguish.
Eventually I decided it had to be a butter and shot it in the head
Cray was home and looked like he might be catchable with a calm approach and skilled use of a noose.
Unfortunately my first dive of the season and first ever attempt using a noose was far from calm or skilled and I came at him from the wrong side and tit's it up and it went back in the Crack never to be seen again.
At least the Son got to watch me balls it up .
Had a look in another couple of spots...found what looks like likely turf with heaps of caves under rocks but didn't see any more crays.
Saw lots and lots of crabs....they were in almost every crack/cave....saw a conger head poking out of its house ....I left it well alone!.
At one spot I chucked my float and gun over while I got mask etc sorted got in and gun was snagged...nope a sizable octopus was holding onto it on top of a big barren rock!
Saw lots of i think blue maw maw ? And lots of red moki and kelpys.
Only the one butter tho.
Was a great dive for first one of the season, not fit...but feeling comfortable in the water even when getting buzzed buy a seal and its pup.

I can't think what else they would be but then I don't spend much time under the water.
The spearo shows I watch have shown thousands of them but I don't recall any of them ever shooting one????
Assumed they were not that good.
Ones I saw were probably only around 25cm tho.

When I was a young fella and fishing with my grandad around the Whale, the Blue Maomoa were always a good back up plan if the snapper and tarakihi fishing was slow, great fun to catch and good to eat. Diving out at the Poor Knights swimming through massive schools of them is a highlight of my diving career.
Wouldn't have thought they would be that far down NZ as always considered them a NI fish. But google says they extend down to Cook Straight and Kaikoura.
Good stuff VC, good to get in the water and blow out the dust aye.
Took a work colleague out for a fish this morning. She had never caught a big snapper .
69 centimeters or over was the goal. We had an early start and we're on the water at the first push of the tide. It wasn't long before the fish started biting.
She landed an 18 pounder around 75 cm and a 23pounder! Both of which released well.
We kept about 10 and released at least that many.
Was home washing the boat before 10am .
Awesome morning out.
