For someone starting out with a convex grind blade, search the net for "mouse pad method" of sharpening using emery paper. Go to mitre10 and buy a sanding pad with the D handle in the back, a foam pad on the front with the spring loaded clamps for holding the paper. Loaded the pad with 800 or 1000 grit paper. Turn the pad upside down and hold it in a vice by the D handle. Follow the internet instructions for method of sharpening. Use an old knife first if you are worried until you get confident. Make of buy a leather strop and invest in some compound. PPS in Auckland sell a range of compounds.
You will be sharpening like a pro in no time.
Then you will want to progress to using a stone .......
Dont have a picture now, but this is what i am using https://swordsswords.com/benchmade-a...ade-knife.html, loving benchmade.
Done, and on its way back. Took 15 minutes with fine emery paper and 4k CBN emulsion on a strop. Then a strop with black and finished with white. The edge just required a little blending and thinning which you will hardly notice from the original edge.
The grind pattern highlighted in your pic is quite usual with BR 3V and not unique to them. Probably the grade of grinding belts they use on this hard steel and maybe your knife was getting towards the end of the belt life.
Thanks @Tahr , good bugga alright!

Little bit of digression
I'm Mercator every time. Nephew is turning 21 this month and want to get him a nice folding knife, something special, around $100. Looking for recommendations. I gave him my Buck Zipper a few years ago so don't want something that will be used as a camp knife (His day his buying him a rifle as he likes my Sako and sisters getting him a new daybag)
I am touring the South Island from tomorrow till 13th then only a 4 days to get something if in Auckland
Cheers in advance
Why not import a "nice" Mercator? Brass scale ones are nice but haven't seen one for sale here in NZ except second hand on trademe

I know they are good but a hundy bucks for one of those is just a rip off.
They have been pricey for a while.
She’s definitely sharper! Cheers @Tahr

After seeing @ROKTOY's shiny new blade at @Pengy's mid winter do I was inspired to make a big hacking type knife. I found an old file and came up with this.

The handle is burnt Rimu bound with paracord and leather. I have left a slight serration on the blade from the file edge but will see how that goes as I can always grind it out if I don't like it. As is it cuts through rope, flax and bamboo with ease.
Nice, what did you use to remove the steel?
Alright you Mercator fans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgiCOg08F7s
No wonder they are so bloody expensive now.
This one, a knock off, I got 20 odd years ago for $7.99. I think the real thing had gone up to about $25 by then and I wasn't going to spend that much.:D

Seen the Mercators at HF on the weekend for 50 bucks so that's not so bad. I heard from the old bushman neighbour when I was growing up, of the lock back failing when they are past their use by date. Never used mine enough to say
While I was there I almost threw up in my mouth when I heard the young salesman trying to sell one to an older dude one. He was right in everything he said about the knife and how good it was but kept calling it a muracator. Made it sound like some form of dinosaur.
Shit that makes mine look almost new

Good value those Kershaws. I fecking hate sharpening recurves though
After hearing such good things about these knives I decided to get one myself - turned up razor sharp so I'm pretty happy for a cheap knife :) Ordered from Trade Tools LTD online (because I couldn't find any in any hardware stores) on the Thursday morning and it arrived Thursday afternoon, same day service is pretty impressive. Going to use it mainly as my dive knife while spearfishing but it will certainly make an appearance in my hunting pack.

@madjon had them at the George Henry store I walked past last week for 11 bucks. Had to get one. How much did they sting you?
Bahco knives deserve their own standalone thread, .....preferably hidden somewhere in the darkest recess of the forums bilge.
Latest version of the file knife.

I used TianFang compressed bamboo for the handle on this one. It is a bit plain but very dense and should be very durable. Blade is 90mm, bit smaller than the last one.

I've had this Bark River knife for a few years and it was looking "tired" so I took it back to the U.S. with me while on holiday and sent it back to Bark River for service under their lifetime warranty.
Warranty
Very happy with that service.
