My mission failed, did `t catch any but lost some softbaits and lures when searching around those under water structures. Hope next year around Sep I could have a chance to go back there again.

Had a great day out off Ohiwa Fishing from a boat today, decided I would fish a 20 gram micro slow jig first up while the rest of the boys on the boat fished bait. I had a ball and caught a heap of snapper with my best going 68cm, no photos as I wanted to get it back in the water after a great fight on the light jigging rod. Caught a Kingfish just under 70cm and a few rats taking the jig on a fast retrieve along with a few Kahawai. Non stop action on snapper in the 28-32 cm range went back and picked up a bonus gurnard and trevally. Hard to get the jig past the blue mackerel schools on a fast drop but when I did it was taken on the bottom or close too. Great fun.
The big 68cm Snapper was caught after catching a smaller snapper off the bottom, winding it up but dropping the small one about 10m off the bottom, I paused to say F*%K all and just got smashed by the big boy "Fish On!!!!", great fight, long runs had the 4000 reel screaming and a healthy bend in the 6-10kg rod.
Havent fished micro slow jigs before but I think I will be going forward. My last fish up here in BOP before heading down to Nelson for a few months, tempted to stay for the fishing now.... Keen to bring the rods and the jigs down south to see if I can get into a few winter Gurnard, cudda and spiky dogs....

the pink jig strikes again.
Great fun, little jigs on light gear.
and very effective.
Gave up using bait years ago, except for nostalgia
Bring all the shiny shit you’ve got, the southern salefish are hungry…
All jokes aside ..get here quick , our snapper season seems to be hanging on by it finger tips …cannot wait to get out into the tide chasing flounder ..
I’m feeling a trip to okiwi should be organised, so let me know when you touch down , we’ll get @veitnamcam home from sea , @Pengy down from his roost , and roster @ROKTOY a weekend off , @Shearer has all sorts of gear to feed to the fishing gods, @kukuwai and lads are fishermen of great ability , @madjon loves a feed of mussels , @mikee can have a weekend off the birds …so that’s a start …the rest of the rat bags can fill the gaps ..
Let’s say Friday - Sunday in a couple of weeks time allowing for VC to be home from fishing to go fishing.
I can book a batch , cheap rates but it’s a bit rough ..
Nil durum volenti !!
If do`t have sea sick, I will buy a nice boat or yacht, and live on it.
So be it
Ferry is booked for two weeks time 10th June. Just packing to see what can fit in back of the ute.
Dog, fishing and hunting gear. Tick.
Rest will squeeze in.
Well I thought Dad had gone bat shit crazy when he wanted to take the boat out in the rain this morning. Surely too late for snapper I thought....
Well I was wrong....the old boy was right again
Didn't bother with a long line which was lucky as we had to weed through a fair amount of spiky dogs and barracuda.
It was worth it for sure as ended up with a couple of snaps and some rather big kahawai .
So there you go @Fat belly Dog there are still a few fish worth catching in the bay
Depth 19m for anyone who might be interested !

Thanks Kukuwai,
Nice looking Kahawai there, do they hang around all year and chase whitebait up the river mouths when they start to run?
The guy who I having been going out fishing with on his boat went again yesterday with another group and they had boat limit of snapper in 1.5 hours and two kingfish well over 75. After a slow start to the season due to rain and wind, he thinks its the best snapper fishing in the Bay of Plenty for the last few years, looks like its the same down your way too.
Cheers FBD
They usually don't hang around in the inner tasman bay over winter. I think the water just gets too cold for them. Can be found up by durville etc where the water temp doesn't vary as much.
Also at the top of the west coast chasing white bait into the rivers (ie patarau, anatori etc) It can be excellant fishing even just off the beach over there in winter.

Nil durum volenti !!
Got wet , for the first time in months , checked out new turf, nothing to show for a tank…back to old faithful spot …heaps and heaps of crays …from 3 inch long to shorts, was an amazing dive …dropped to the bottom , the rock / cave was empty apart from a few cast shells …looked around the rest of the turf bloody crays everywhere little long feel’rd crays…
Swam around rest of the turf …many many more small crays …rolled over to the last cave in the area and “ you beauty” moment , a couple bigger crays ..
Looked at the biggest out in a wide open cave , I really wanted to give him a heave , but experience said take the handy keeper so sacked him, and grabbed second but she was egged up so let her go, the big bugger was cunning as retreating just out of reach…
The cold water took its toll and back into the boat I climbed…
Cheers VC for a wicked day out, still trying to warm up …let’s do it again …because we are very good at it
Nil durum volenti !!
@stingray perfect winters day fishing, it was a bit busy down at the end of the road when we drove past at 10am, at least 1/2 dozen boats out...
Looked good this afternoon as well as the tide fulled in and the slight seabreee dropped. Whats the water temp at the moment
Nice haul of carrots.
Cheers FBD
